7.53.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 25th Oct 2007

Ten changes I would like to see in the European Union

• Democratic accountability.

• Transparent decision making process.

• Moratorium on transfer of power.

• More strategic and enabling roles and less authoritarian and interventionist roles.

• Streamlined, cost effective and less bureaucratic institutions.

• Meaningful and effective reforms.

• Fiscal probity, rooting out waste and eliminating fraud.

• Meaningful benefits for all EU citizens.

• More decisiveness in response to global crises and challenges arising from terrorism; safeguarding human rights and upholding environmental protection.

• Being a force for good in the world and a beacon of fairness, prosperity and peaceful existence. Honest broker in world trade talks and leading advocate for global treaty on arms trade.
